![]() ![]() It just doesn't sound in control compare to a Rega arm and the top end especially sounds a bit muddy and closed in which overall makes it seem a bit mechanical and uninvolving. Where the stock arm really lets it down is control. In stock form it sounds much more solid than the Rega and times much better with drums starting and stopping in a far more realistic manner for instance compared to the soft focus of the Rega. The Technics is a different animal altogether. Set up to the best possible extent in stock form the Rega is probably the more musically satisfying of the two and although it lacks real weight behind the instruments it bowls you over with sheer exuberance. Both need to be on a very good isolated foundation like a wall shelf without which the Rega sounds cheap and nasty and the Technics sounds noisy and old fashioned. I have lived with a Rega Plannar 3 and several pairs of Technics SL1200/1210s over the years. They are both good starter decks but the Technics has real potential with a more modern arm. Just out of curiosity, have any of you heard both on the same system (with significant listening time)? Originally Posted by asdf /img/forum/go_quote.gif ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() British forces captured the slab from Napoleon’s army in Egypt in 1802 and shipped it to the British Museum, initiating a quest by two geniuses to unlock the code. “How would anyone ever learn that the sounds c-a-t pronounced in quick succession meant ‘furry animal with whiskers’?”Īll that changed with the Rosetta Stone. “Suppose the last English speaker had died 20 centuries ago,” Dolnick writes. Others ventured up similarly blind alleys, stumped by symbols that offered no clues about whether they were to be read phonetically, or stood for ideas. A hawk must symbolize a god, he posited, because birds fly on a slant and “only the hawk flies straight upward.” A hare connotes “open” because it seemed never to shut its eyes. Horapallo, a fifth-century Egyptian priest, believed that each pictograph had a deep hidden meaning, and he engaged in wild stabs in the dark to figure out what that was. Like Fox, Dolnick exuberantly captures the frustrations and triumphs of scholars as they puzzle out the meaning of long-dead runes, “seduced by tantalizing clues and then careening into dead ends and losing hope, but then spotting new markers and dashing off jubilantly once more.” With its thrilling dissection of the decoding process, it calls to mind Margalit Fox’s “ The Riddle of the Labyrinth: The Quest to Crack an Ancient Code” (2013), about three scholars who deciphered Linear B, the 3,400-year-old script excavated from the ruins of Crete’s Minoan civilization. A former science writer for The Boston Globe and the author of books about Isaac Newton and a Dutch art forger who duped the Nazis, Dolnick here conjures up another intricate intellectual caper. The discovery of the slab, called the Rosetta Stone after the town in which it was found, reignited the ultimate linguistic challenge: deciphering the symbols of the Pharaohs.Įdward Dolnick’s “The Writing of the Gods: The Race to Decode the Rosetta Stone” is an engrossing account of the 20-year competition that followed. All three were dead languages, but the Greek alphabet was still in use. And the three bands of text - classical Greek, hieroglyphs and an Egyptian shorthand called Demotic - were intended to proclaim the monarch’s achievements in multiple tongues to the peoples of the empire. The nearly one-ton stela, experts determined, had come from a temple dedicated to the Greek-Egyptian King Ptolemy V in 196 B.C. ![]() Pierre-François Bouchard, the officer in charge, sensed its significance and turned it over to scholars for analysis. Amid a pile of rubble being used for a renovation project, he noticed a 4-foot-by-3-foot granite slab, covered on one side with intricate inscriptions. On a steamy day in July 1799, a member of a French military work detail at a tumbledown fort in the Nile Delta made an unusual discovery. This is definitely a cue we can take from the Apple folks. ![]() I'm thrilled each time I download and play with some throwaway little utility but the developer has taken the time to integrate a Windows 7 feature like JumpLists, Taskbar Progress or even just taken the time to create a decent high-res icon. I think it's great that Windows 7 has a definable style that developers are embracing. Kudos, truly, to Stardock for showing not only a sense of restraint but also for embracing what I think of as the "new Windows aesthetic." Years of ridiculous toolbars, poor icon design, the Crayola-color themes of Windows XP and general gaudiness has watered down Windows and made it almost impossible to consider it an "visually attractive" OS. It's not like to many loud or garish utilities that take over some aspect of Windows and feel the need to announce their presence with bright colors obnoxious splashscreens. What's wonderful about Fences is that it is so subtle but so powerful that it truly becomes part of Explorer and feels like it's always there. That said, Fences from Stardock is one of those apps that extends Windows in such a comfortable and natural way, it should be built in. Many of the tools I've espoused over the years simply aren't needed in Windows 7 as they were filling gaps that are no longer there. Frankly, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with all the free time that I'm saving not dicking around with my computer trying to get it to work. Or you can buy 4K movies on physical Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. Currently you are stuck with 4K streams from Netflix, Amazon and YouTube only. The access to 4K content is limited thought. The simplest way of defining the difference between 4K and Ultra HD is this: 4K is a professional production and cinema standard, while UHD is a consumer display and broadcast standard.ĤK TVs have hit the market for a few years and you can purchase some well-performing 4K televisions, such as Vizio's Du series, Insignia's NS-DR710NA17 series, LG's OLED65G6P, Sony XBR-65X950B, Samsung UN65HU8550, etc. For televisions, 4K has standardized to 3840x2160 while digital cinema 4K (the resolution in 4K movie theaters) is slightly higher at 4096x2160.įor most people, these two terms are interchangeable. Nowadays, several 4K resolutions exist in the fields of digital television and digital cinematography. 4K screens have about 8 million pixels, which is around four times what 1080p set can display and over 23 times the resolution of SD television. To put that in perspective, a full HD 1080p image is only a 1920x1080 resolution. At its most basic, 4K describes the resolution of your TV set (or the amount of pixels used to make up an image). How to Convert SD/HD Video to 4K Ultra HDĤK, as the name suggests, refers to a display device or content having horizontal resolution on the order of 4,000 pixels and vertical resolution on the order of 2000 pixels. ![]() Key Features of Joyoshare 4K UHD Converter So is it possible for us to convert some SD or HD videos we already own to 4K format so that we can play those videos on 4K-capable equipements as well?
